Veho is an up-and-coming consumer electronics brand out of the United Kingdom. With a penchant for cutting-edge, stylish gadgets, the brand is building a robust reputation and quickly becoming a household name throughout the world. Consequently, it comes as no surprise that the trendy, versatile Veho Muvi Atom, our Top Ten Reviews Gold Award winner, sits atop our top three spy cams.

The Atom spy cam is smaller and weighs less than the first-ranked WINN MD90 Mini DV and the second-ranked Global CCTV Security Mini DV LJ-DV811. However, the camera lacks some of the functionalities found on the top two products and has a shorter battery life and slightly less memory capacity. Such deficiencies relegate the spy cam to a third-place ranking.

The Veho Muvi Atom has much of the same functionality as our other top spy cams including a recording LED indicator, VOX (or noise-activated) standby mode and data transferring through an included USB cable. Additionally, the mini camera also has a durable alloy casing and a decent maximum viewing angle of 72 degrees. What the spy cam does lack is webcam functionality, a real-time clock function and an automatic shut-off feature, all of which keep it from being tantamount with our first- and second-ranked products. We were also disappointed that the camera did not have audio-only mode (though given its mediocre output quality, which is referenced below, it's probably a good thing it doesn't).

The camera is touted by Veho as one of the smallest camcorders in the world. While such a broad claim may initially sound a bit dubious, there's no question the camera is overall the tiniest spy cam we reviewed: it weighs a miniscule 1.4 ounces and measures one and three-quarters inches in height and just three-quarters of an inch in both depth and width. Aside from its small dimensions, the all-black color scheme helps make the Atom an ideal hidden spy camera that can easily be concealed either on the body or in a room (though the camera is also available in white). One minor downfall of the design we noticed is the power switch seems to be a little loose; it can be switched on or off without any difficulty or applied pressure and can easily be turned off accidentally without any notice.

One of the best things about this particular spy cam is the surprising amount of mounting hardware it comes with, enabling a vast range of versatility and even easier and more covert surveillance. The mini camera comes with a wall mounting bracket, helmet mounting bracket, spring mounting clip, head strap and neck chain. Moreover, users will also find included velcro, screws and straps to facilitate convenient and secure attachment just about anywhere, from bike handlebars to a shirt pocket.

The Veho Muvi Atom offers the standard video and image specifications found on most comparable self-contained spy cams, with an image resolution of 2MP (megapixels) and video resolution of 640x480. The camera's video function shoots in AVI format (a video format compatible with Windows operating systems) with a frame rate of 30 frames per second. The video picture and still images the camera produces are pretty decent but the audio is mediocre at best; unless the range between the camera and audio source is relatively close (approximately five feet or less), there will be a fair amount of muffling and distorted sound. If audio or high picture clarity is a priority, we would recommend looking into models or compact cameras that boast higher output quality.

Despite its average video and image output, this spy cam offers respectable memory capabilities. Equipped with a 2GB microSD memory card, the mini camera can store up to 90 minutes of recorded footage internally. Furthermore, it has a built-in card slot that is compatible with microSD cards up to 8GB – though we would have been far more impressed with 16GB compatibility.

The battery is one area that the Atom spy cam needs major improvement. Although it comes with a built-in rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, the battery only lasts 45 minutes with continuous operation. There are some reports from users that with extended use the battery's performance worsens. Plus, the battery takes longer to charge (it charges through its compatible USB cable) than the amount of time the battery actually lasts. However, given its miniature size, we weren't surprised to find the battery doesn't offer long-lasting performance.

Muvi Atom Summary:
8.2/10

With its mediocre video and image output and subpar battery performance, the Atom spy cam can seem a bit gimmicky and frivolous, especially if you want to use it for practical or important circumstances. However, we love the camera's varied mounting capabilities, decent memory capacity and compact, stylish design. If you are looking for a tiny, novelty hidden spy camera to use for personal enjoyment and fun, look no further than the Veho Muvi Atom.
